Hello! It seems like Substack is the new/old blog, and I’m here for it. I’m definitely not sure I like Instagram, it feels like constant feeding, but for just very quick glimpses and I really miss the early 2000’s era of blogs where I would intentionally have a list of blogs I’d check in my Bloglovin’ feed weekly and it was a great way to stay inspired, and keep up with what other maker’s were up to without it consuming all of my spare brain space and time. So in that line, let’s start a Substack that’s pretty much a maker’s blog :)
This is an illustration I made recently, I’ve been calling it my “Mom’s in summer without childcare” editorial illustration. This is what life has been like for the past few years with having small children at the start of the pandemic. It feels a little traumatic looking back trying to balance the needs of toddlers, while still being expected to work a desk day job that was demanding, and keep everyone sane. Since the pandemic ended and life went back to “normal” ish, every time there’s a school break or summer break it feels like we’re right back to it. Childcare is extraordinarily expensive in the US, and especially so in cities, rendering it completely not an option anymore. Up until recently I’ve had a day job that really took over my life for nearly a decade. Prior to that I was always a freelance illustrator and designer, artwork took a backseat for a few years while my day job took over, and while I was off all of the platforms, literally everything changed, blogs are out, instagram was in and now is like instagram on drugs, and it’s tricky trying to navigate getting back into full time freelance life.
I’m thrilled to be back doing what I really love, and to rebuild my portfolio with more recent works, and also rediscover some past works.
